interfacing an actisense NGW-1-ISO into DMK 11A

I managed to successfully (mostly) integrate the DMK 11A into my N2K network. The wifi connection provided most instrument data correctly to DMK app on my iPhone. Since I want to run iRegatta, I needed to convert the N2K data to 0183 protocol. I used the Actisense NGW-1-ISO gateway to convert N2K traffic into 0183 traffic for integration with the DMK 11A. At this point the DMK 11A ceased to transmit instrument data with the iPhone app. I still see "heartbeat" sentence when viewing the packet log but nothing else. I likely have the wiring connection incorrect. Please see the attached .pdf description. Thank you for your support.

    Hello Mark,

I just got word from Thomas, iRegatta's creator that he has a working beta for NMEA 2000 data and iRegatta. I need to help him with some testing but you may not need the actisence here for too much longer.

I suspect the issue is with the wiring. The PDF you provided was very helpful. I would recommend that you connect both the DMK Black and white wires along with the Actisense blue NMEA ground to the ship's ground. I'm not sure I would connect the other NMEA ground. I just helped out another customer on a phone call where that was the wiring that successfully got the signal into our box. He had the box set to 4800 baud but the baud rate change should not be an issue.

Looking at the LED's can also help. Check that the GPS LED is blinking about 1 time a second and that the NMEA port LED is flashing. If the NMEA Port LED is not flashing then the box is not getting a signal. This could be due to wiring or not having the baud rate correct. Try following the wiring I suggested then double check that the baud rates are really both set the same. If the GPS LED is not blinking than check the switch in the "Settings" menu of the app for "On-board GPS" enabled.

If all LED's are blinking correctly and you are using an iPad, it may be that you accidentally have the DMK App filter on. Check that "all" is selected from the buttons on the Packet Log page.

You can always shoot me an email or call if you are on the boat and have questions.

I really look forward to the N2K version of iRegatta.

After going back and forth with support staff from Actisense, the issue was resolved by setting the NGW-1 to 4800 baud rather than any higher data rate. Even 9600 would't work.

On a slightly different topic, I originally wired the DMK 11A with the N2K signals. The DMK iPhone app would display the depth and boat speed data correctly (as far as I could tell) but not the wind data associated with the Airmar 200. The wind speed didn't seem correct and the wind direction appeared random. This appeared to occur after the correct calibration on the weather station was accomplished. I used the actisense NGT-1 to port the data to my laptop and observed the weather station N2K data from there. It appeared steady and consistent with the observed conditions. In my mind, the issue was isolated to be either the DMK wifi or the iPhone app causing the random wind direction display.

In any case, I appreciate you taking the time to help me out and I appreciate your product. I am committed to install an iPad, wireless based instrumentation system on my boat and the DMK is the heart of this concept.

    Thank you,

    Hey Mark,

Glad you got it figured out. I will remember that about the NGW-1 if I
have any other customers try to change the baud rate. iRegatta Version
3.16.0 should have NMEA 2000 connectivity. Thomas just did not advertise
it yet because it has not been tested. However it would be a big help if
you tried it and verified that it works. I plan on trying it out next week
on a customer's boat but the more testing the better. As you saw from our
app, there is a lot of need for testing on the NMEA 2000 spec. It cost
lots of money to look at the data spec so developers have to figure it out
for themselves through real world trials. We have a plan to update our app
this summer with more features and bug fixes but things always move slower
    that we like.
